1.Centrifugal brake
- It is fitted to restrict the speed of descent to 36 m/min,
- While the power supplied to the winch must be sufficient to raise the boat at 18 m/min.
- It consist of 3 pads pivoted at one end and other end showing arrow in the fig. is free.
- As the speed increases more than 36 m/min because of centrifugal force the free end will move out making contact with the drum. Thus speed decreases.
-This brake can only be tested by lowering the life boat (Loaded up to 110% capacity)
2.Dead man's brake
- The wires which allow the boat to be lowered are termed Falls and are controlled by a small winch.
- The boats are lowered by raising a weighted lever known as dead man's handle which releases the brake in the winch.
- This brake is tested by lifting the lifeboat 50 mm 100 mm off the rests with harbour pins in.
