A Citadel as defined in BMP4 is “A designated pre-planned area purpose built into the ship where, in the
event of imminent boarding by pirates, all crew will seek protection. A Citadel is designed and constructed
to resist a determined pirate trying to gain entry for a fixed period of time.”
Citadel may be considered the final safe haven, and should protect against determined intrusion, including a limited ballistic attack, the Citadel rationale should be part of a layered level of security, where approaches to the Citadel are effectively protected. The predetermined time period will be determined by a Risk Assessment, dependent upon the vessels trading patterns, construction, and needs.
